Meals on Wheels of Polk County, Inc. has issued an urgent appeal for additional volunteer drivers to help handle a significant surge in the number of homebound people needing meals on a daily basis. The increased demand is a direct result of more senior citizens opting to remain inside to avoid exposure to COVID-19. During the pandemic, the number of households served by Meals on Wheels has surged from 350 to between 450 and 500 per day. mealsonwheelspolk.com.
AdventHealth has been selected as a testing site for the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson’s Phase 3 clinical research study, known as the Ensemble trial, to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Janssen’s investigational COVID-19 vaccine candidate. Polk County Public Schools is currently experiencing a bus driver shortage and is looking to hire bus drivers for all areas of the county. Congratulations to Straughn Trout Architects on receiving the People’s Choice Award at the AIA Tampa Bay Celebrate Design 2020 Awards for their design of the AdventHealth Fieldhouse & Conference Center. Voting ended Nov. 4th. The project included strategic architectural and building system upgrades to the structure originally constructed in 1976 that includes a 334-seat community theater, art gallery, municipal recreational program spaces, and aquatics facilities. A new geothermal heat pump system now heats and cools both the building and the pools.
TOYS FOR TOTS
On November 7, bikers put up their kickstands and revved their engines for kids in the community as part of the Mike on a Bike motorcycle run and Family Fest. The fee to join the ride was a new unwrapped toy to donate. According to the Polk County Toys for Tots Facebook page, hundreds of toys were donated along with monetary donations to support the Polk County Toys for Tots Campaign. Polk County Public Schools now has a call center available to help parents with their questions about COVID-19. The call center is open from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, except for school holidays. The phone number is 863-298-5206. Call center employees can answer general questions about COVID-19, including common questions about testing and quarantining.
