POLK DISTRICT COLLEGE FAIR
On Oct. 8 from 6-8pm at the George Jenkins Field House at Florida Southern College. The event is FREE for all Polk County Public School students. This is a great opportunity for students and families to meet with admissions representatives from a wide variety of colleges and universities.
BANKERS CUP CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Every year, the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce honors a man and a woman for the Banker’s Cup Citizen of the Year Awards. This Award is considered Winter Haven’s highest honor as it recognizes a citizen who has made a significant impact/contribution over a number of years or through a single project. The Woman of the Year is Debbie Harsh with CenterState Bank and the Man of the Year is Bud Strang with Six/Ten LLC. Congratulations!
SEMIFINALISTS FROM POLK COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Three students from PCPS are among the semifinalists for this year’s National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Karol Aleman from Lakeland High, Owens Parker from Bartow IB and Parker Widener from Harrison School for the Arts! There are approximately 16,000 “academically talented” National Merit Scholarship semifinalists this year, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.
LEGOLAND FLORIDA HELPS BAHAMAS
The theme park offered a deeply discounted 25 dollar single-day theme park ticket for one weekend only with ten dollars of each ticket set to be donated to the American Red Cross. The offer resulted in the collection of $126,760. In addition, they served as a collection point for guests, collecting a total of 4,500 pounds of items including nonperishable goods. They will be donated directly to those in The Bahamas who were impacted by Hurricane Dorian.
NEW SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR PCPS ATHLETIC EVENTS
As an additional safety measure, backpacks, bags and large purses are prohibited at all Polk County Public Schools athletic events. Small, 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches are allowed but are subject to search. More info at polkschoolsfl.com
FORMER DETECTIVE ARRESTED
On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, PCSO detectives arrested 31-year-old Dennis Jones, Jr., who was hired as a PCSO deputy sheriff in July 2013 and became a detective in October 2017, for two counts public servant falsifying official records (F-3), one count forgery (F-3), and one count uttering false instrument (F-3). He resigned immediately upon his arrest.
ReadingPals is a statewide early literacy initiative that provides volunteer mentors for students from Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) to 3rd grade who may need extra help, utilizing one-on-one or small group settings.
