Ruben Perez, M.D. Internal Medicine Heart of Florida Physicians Group

Dr. Perez was born and raised in Puerto Rico.  That’s where his passion for medicine began.  “My father came from a very poor family in Puerto Rico, and I saw first-hand the suffering of many people due to lack of medical care. I wanted to make a difference.”

In 1989, Dr. Perez moved to Seattle, Washington.  He attended the University of Washington, and obtained a bachelor’s of science in Microbiology. From there, he went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to attend the University of Pennsylvania for medical school. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Perez moved to Houston, Texas and attended the University of Texas Health Science Center.   He completed his residency in Internal Medicine. During this time, he met his soon to be wife.  “After completing my residency, I got married, and moved to Florida.”

After working at other medical facilities for 18 years and then opening his own practice for a year and a half, Dr. Perez joined the Heart of Florida Physician Group in Davenport, Florida in April 2016.  “And I have been with them ever since.” After several years at the Davenport office, Dr. Perez opened his Heart of Florida Physician Group Internal Medicine office in Winter Haven earlier this year and is accepting new patients. His practice focuses on adult and geriatric medicine.

Besides Dr. Perez’s desire to help others, he became interested in medicine because of his love for science and the desire to make a difference in other people’s lives. “I wanted to have the knowledge to cure illnesses, and to relieve suffering,” he explained.Dr. Perez’s specialty is Internal Medicine. This allows him to diagnose and treat a broad range of conditions, encompassing all organ systems of the human body, and therefore it allows him to have the greatest impact on his patient’s health.  Dr. Perez has more than 30 years of experience and specializes in caring for adults with a wide range of health concerns, from common illnesses to complex, chronic medical problems.  He is board-certified in Internal Medicine.  He is well known for treating his patients with an empathy that he credits learning as a child in Puerto Rico.

The thing that Dr. Perez loves most about his job is the fact that he has the knowledge to save a life, to cure an illness, or just the opportunity to positively impact someone’s life.   Working in Polk County is a bonus.  “I like the fact that it is a small town, and a great place to raise a family.  I see myself working in Polk County until retirement age.”

Dr. Perez is fluent in Spanish.
