COUCH TO 5K TRAINING
Every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 8 a.m., Bok Tower Gardens. Running training designed to motivate someone “out of shape” to prepare for a 5K race. By the last meeting, you will be ready to run at the Carillon Classic 5K on February 23, 2019. Training sessions free with general admission or membership; separate charge applies for Carillon Classic 5K.
THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
Jan. 03 - 20, Theatre Winter Haven. The tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell. Does contain adult themes, language and humor.
TAPESTRY THE CAROLE KING SONGBOOK
Jan. 08, 7:30 p.m. at the RP Funding Center. The Premier musical tribute to Carole King. This show recreates the sound and vibe of a 1970s Carole King concert experience following her legendary album, Tapestry. You will be transported back to the iconic image of her multi-million selling album of 1971.
BRASS ROOTS TRIO: CON BRIO!
Jan. 11, 7 p.m. at the Lake Wales Arts Center. Their concert will feature the music of Copeland, Manfredini, Lobos, Piazzolla, Rossini, Verdi, and much more! A fusion of classical, jazz, Americana and Latin styles. In 2009 Brass Roots Trio was honored to perform for President and Mrs. Obama and their guests at the White House.
DIRT DAYS: FLORIDA TREES
Jan. 12, 10 a.m. at Circle B Bar Reserve. Polk County Master Gardeners will present four fun, activity-filled workshops for kids in K - 5th grade.The workshops will highlight Central Florida’s native plants and the conservation of Central Florida pristine habitats with a different topic and engaging outdoor activities / crafts.
PINTS FOR PAWS LAKELAND BEER FEST
Jan. 18, 7 - 10 p.m. at Lake Mirror in Lakeland. Attendees will enjoy unlimited sampling of a large variety of beer and other fine beverages. Leashed pets are welcome. All ticket sales are final, Pints for Paws donates 100% of the sales to The Humane Society of Polk County, Inc. Jan. 18 - Feb. 03 at the Lake Wales Little Theatre. The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice.
WILLIAM SCHAAF: THE WAY OF THE EQUINE
Jan. 19 - June 8 at Polk Museum of Art. For many years, Bill Schaaf has explored equine imagery in his paintings and sculpture. The horse figure is an iconic metaphor for power, sensuality, transition and beauty and has occupied a dominant place in his visual vocabulary.
Jan. 20, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at Bok Tower Gardens. Enjoy extra special dog inspired events. Regular general admissioan applied to humans and $5 per dog. 50% of canine proceeds benefit Humane Society of Polk County.
