Secluded, peaceful and elegant. Modern architecture. Two of the top golf courses in the country with a third course opening September 29th. A European-style grotto spa with a staff attending to your every need to rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit.

It’s Streamsong Resort and it’s located in rural Polk County, only an hour drive from Winter Haven.

I was lucky to spend the weekend there recently and was astounded at the beauty and architecture. It’s a very modern building surrounded by a landscape that suddenly doesn’t feel like Florida anymore. 16,000 acres of serene nature.

The 216-room Lodge was the unique vision of Architect Albert Alfonso from Ybor City. The building represents the Earth, more specifically water, wind and fire. You see a lot of reclaimed wood, stone, marble, leather, very earthy materials. Water is on the golf course and outside the lodge.

In the guest rooms, the wooden shutters are meant to represent leaves blowing in the wind. There are fire pits with big chairs surrounding it, inviting you to relax and enjoy the night sky.

“They’ve made a very modern architectural wonder out of this that you don’t expect to see when you drive all the way out here in Polk County,” James Bullock, Director of Sales & Marketing explained.

The guest rooms are spacious. When you walk in, you immediately see the floor to ceiling windows across one wall. The room is separated by a large marble-topped desk and two televisions. On one side is a couch and 11 books meticulously cut out in the wall to serve as storage and art. The books are there for you to read while lounging around. On the other side is a bed, which was extremely comfortable and a large bathroom. Every detail is luxurious and feels special. If you want a place to go to and be distracted from everyday life, this is the place. The view from our window was of the lake surrounded by sprawling landscape. No traffic, no stores, no noise. It’s a completely sophisticated distraction-free environment that forces you to slow down.

The first night we ate dinner at Restaurant Fifty-Nine which required a short shuttle ride to the Clubhouse. Known for their Prime beef and fresh seafood, they did not disappoint. The restaurant was filled with golfers fresh off the course. We followed up with cocktails at Fragmentary Blue on the roof of the Lodge. They have specialty bourbons, scotches, tequilas, vodkas and seasonal cocktails. There’s something for everyone. The views are spectacular and like dinner, everything is so gorgeous you just want to stop and soak it in.

Streamsong is a destination for golfers both nationally and internationally. “It’s atypical of what you’d see in other golf resorts around the country. It’s golf-centric.” Bullock said. With the addition of Streamsong Black, Par 73, this resort will be the only location in the world where guests can enjoy three distinct courses by four legendary architects. These courses are unlike anything else you will see in Florida. With firm and fast playing conditions, expansive greens, gaping bunkers and demanding tee shots surrounded by native plants, lakes and fields of prairie grasses. Streamsong Red and Blue were designed in 2012 consecutively, side by side of two intersecting designs specifically designed for walking. It’s breathtaking. The Red and Blue courses have quickly been awarded as some of the best courses in America by top golf magazines. Named Red and Blue because Coore & Crenshaw used a red pen to outline the red course and Tom Doak of the Renaissance Golf Design used a blue pen to outline his. Streamsong Black was designed by Gil Hanse of Hanse Golf Design, and yes, he used a black pen.

“Black will be spectacular. It’s different in design from the other 2. It will redefine us, it will bring in more golfers nationally and internationally,” Bullock explained. The new restaurant is called Bone Valley Tavern and will feature a 32-seat bar Gastropub with really great beers, interesting food inside an all glass building with spectacular vistas like none other in Streamsong.”

Streamsong also offers tennis, a fitness center, an infinity pool, sporting clays and bass fishing. Bullock said, “We have some of the best bass fishing in the US if not the world. We have very large bass in all of these lakes. There’s more to do than just golf.”

We went on a 2-hour guided bass fishing excursion one of the mornings. A very nice young man named Eric took us out onto the lake and taught me how to cast and (try) to catch a fish. I ended up seeing two alligators, broke my hook off on a tree branch and caught one lilypad. My husband showed much more skill and caught five bass. It was my first time out on a boat fishing like that, it was pretty peaceful.

If a spa experience is more your thing, try AcquaPietra Spa in the lower level of the Lodge. Described as a chic European-style grotto, you walk into a serene space with architecture reminiscent of trees in a forest and pools of bright blue water. I tried the hour-long deep tissue massage and I loved it. It was relaxing and you will be pampered the moment you walk in. I would definitely recommend it.

On our last night there, we tried Sottoterra. It’s also in the Lodge’s lower level.

It’s very modern with classic Italian food. I was told by several people to try the one-pound Italian meatball appetizer. Yes, it’s an appetizer. It’s meant to share, and it was so good. I had the roasted Branzino for dinner and ate every last bite. The dining room is beautiful with a wall of windows looking out. Like everywhere else at Streamsong, it was stunning.

Bullock ended with this, “Peace and tranquility is what you get from a resort like this. It’s a destination, a place where you can get away from it all. There are no condos, homes, streets, it’s a very tranquil getaway. With 5 levels of cuisine, it’s a one stop shop for a great weekend getaway if you live in Central Florida.”

I couldn’t agree more. My husband loved bass fishing and I loved the spa. We both loved the food and sharing a bottle of wine together.

It was one of the most luxurious weekends of my life.
