Opened in 1974 by Jane Coyle, Highland School of Dance was taken over by now owner and director, former HSD student Hayley Amis-Stewart. They offer classes in Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Modern, Musical Theater, and Acrobatics. Former Highland School of Dance students have gone on to dance in college and professionally, from Disney World and Busch Gardens to MODAS, in Broadway productions, and beyond. One dance mom and former student writes, “Highland School of Dance is by far the best dance studio in Lakeland! They are a technique-based studio with excellent teachers and incredible performance opportunities. HSD was my second home growing up and I’m so grateful that my daughters get the chance to experience the same thing.”

Every year, around 140,000 visitors explore The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art, formerly known as Polk Museum of Art. Recently rebranded as an academic and community museum, the Museum offers free admission and regularly updated exhibits. Patrons can marvel at their expansive collection of over 2,800 objects, showcasing contemporary art, Asian art, pre-Columbian art, African art, and decorative art. The Museum features works from both its collection and renowned artists, including Pablo Picasso, Albert Paley, Miriam Schapiro, Andy Warhol, and more. In February 2022, they unveiled plans for a significant expansion. The $6M project, now expanded to 14,000 additional square feet, will add new gallery, classroom, and art laboratory spaces to the existing 38,000-square-foot facility, with the new twostory section planned for the northwest side of the building.

“MONARCH BUTTERFLIES” BY GILLIAN FAZIO

Commissioned by the Lakeland Community & Economic Development Department, Gillian Fazio was tapped to beautify the Downtown Redevelopment District. The mural is by the Lake Mirror Tower Apartments on the wall facing the lake. The mural depicts beautiful monarch butterflies fluttering from flower to flower. A Lakeland native, Fazio graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors’ Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Florida in 2017. Fazio has painted over 20 murals across Central Florida from Tampa to Anna Maria Island and describes herself as a “new age flora and fauna artist.”

The studio is in a unique 1924 warehouse-turnedgallery space. ART/ifact houses local artists and provides a workspace away from home “to cultivate their skills, techniques, and relationships. The open floor gallery design promotes an environment of collaboration and neighborliness with other artists or visitors.” Sadly, ART/ifact Studios recently announced its closing. This beautiful, accepting, creative community space will be missed.
