Reflecting on Florida's State Tree
Florida’s state tree, the cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto), is one of the most recognizable native plants in our landscape. It grows along highways, in neighborhoods, and throughout Florida’s natural areas, from pine flatwoods to wetlands and prairies. Because it is so common, it is easy to overlook. But the cabbage palm is more than a familiar backdrop. It is a native species that plays an important role in supporting Florida’s wildlife, especially in landscapes that are increa

Arbor Day in Florida
As January settles in, life in Polk County’s cities, towns, and neighborhoods often slows to a comfortable rhythm. While much of the country waits until late April to celebrate Arbor Day, Florida marks the occasion several months sooner. Our subtropical climate makes it safe—and even beneficial—to plant trees during the cooler, drier winter months (with proper irrigation). By doing this now, young saplings have time to develop strong root systems before facing the intense hea

Florida's Fall Colors
As fall arrives in Florida, locals might notice a subtle change in the landscape. While northern states experience dramatic bursts of color from elm, oak, and birch trees, Florida’s fall is more understated. Nevertheless, several native and nonnative trees offer beautiful splashes of color during the fall months. Understanding why these trees change color can deepen our appreciation for the natural beauty Florida provides, even during a season many associate with milder chang

Vignettes from Winter Haven’s History
ABOUT THE CHINABERRY TREE In the beginning years of Winter Haven’s history, the early 1900s, a Chinaberry tree grew in the east-bound lane of what is now Central Avenue in downtown Winter Haven. The Southern Railway Station was located just to the southwest in what is now South Central Park. In those days the tree was a shady spot where residents tied their horses while they took care of personal business downtown. It was there under the Chinaberry tree where neighbor met nei

Palm Care in Central Florida
Many people think of palm trees when they think of Florida. It is an iconic species and Florida’s state tree, specifically the cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto). Cypress Trees: A Conduit of Culture and History
Woven into the fabric of Polk County’s heritage, cypress trees have a storied history and cultural significance. Native American cultures in Central Florida, such as the Calusa and the Timucuan, once utilized the durable wood of cypress for creating canoes and dwellings. You can see one of these dugout canoes at Polk’s Nature Discovery Center at Circle B Bar Reserve; it is displayed behind glass in one of the classrooms. If you have trouble finding it, ask the front desk volu

Florida’s Fiery Season:The Importance of Prescribed Burns
Fire, often perceived with apprehension, plays a pivotal role in maintaining Florida’s diverse ecosystems. Today, I’ll be chatting about the interplay between fire and nature, particularly highlighting the winter/spring fire season in Florida, and underscoring the significance of adopting firewise behaviors in neighborhoods inside or adjacent to the wildland urban interface (often abbreviated to WUI, and sometimes pronounced ‘Woo-EE’). THE DUAL NATURE OF FIRE IN FLORIDA In F

Blood Oranges
Photograph by Adam Strang Bass My family grew oranges in a grove next to a little wild lake in Polk County for four generations. The grove yielded its sweet crop and stood next to the lake for over 75 years. It was home to turkey, bobcat, hogs, and deer. It shielded the lake and kept it, at least in my young mind, a wild and sacred place, and those rows of green trees covered in golden globes witnessed many good memories and moments of solitude. It was a place I loved. In 198
